Hen Looking for Home Update: A Home Has Been Found!!

12/16/21 UPDATE: Isa has a new home!!

HELP FIND A HOME FOR “ISA” THE ISA BROWN HEN!

Isa the brown hen

Name: Isa
Age/Breed: ~1 year, 7 month old Isa Brown Hen
Description: Spunky and healthy Isa Brown hen that’s a reliable, daily layer.
Location: Chicago, south side
Reason for Re-homing: Our small organization just lost our other hen (a Plymouth Blue Rock) who had persistent health issues with laying for a long time. We are a nonprofit organization that doesn’t have the staffing or space to take other chicks/hens at this time of year. We know that a single hen is not a happy hen… and are concerned about keeping her warm enough through the coldest parts of winter all by herself. We have feed and other supplies.

Four Hens for Adoption

I am passing along this message to my readers:

We have 4 beautiful chickens who are a year old and provide TONS of eggs. Organic fed since birth, see photos below of birds and eggs. NO KILL. Docile, love to be held and love chatting with you.

Please text JC at 773 251 9270. Thank you.

Four laying hens available for rehoming!

Chicken keeping, up close and personal with Cluck Nut the chicken

A lot of people turned out at the Lemont Public Library last night to hear me talk about chicken keeping. I was ably assisted by Cluck Nut the chicken, who was a very good sport! She is a client’s chicken I borrowed for the occasion.

It was great to present a live chicken-keeping class for the first time in over a year. Among other topics, I talked about chicken breeds, chicken coops, chicken feed, and how a chicken purse led me to my improbable career as an urban chicken consultant.

A great time was had by all — even the chicken. I invited participants to feel her crop, where all the food goes when she swallows. Filled with grain, It feels a lot like a hackysack! Have you ever seen a chicken’s ears? On Cluck Nut, they are small but unmistakable. While I talked, Cluck Nut roamed the table next to me, getting to know the people lucky enough to sit up front. In-person classes are so much fun!
