“Jenn, Thank you for consulting on our backyard coop and micro flock. Your amazing report debunked all the common myths and biases people have toward backyard chickens. We submitted it with our chicken application to the Zoning Board. The board voted yes, unanimously to approve our request to have Backyard Chickens! We are now the proud keepers of six legal, healthy and happy chickens. We are so thankful we found you.” — Jim & Karen & family, Springfield, VA
A very kind recommendation from Facebook. Thank you!

More positive feedback from my clients:
“Jennifer, thank you so much. Your knowledge and ability to evaluate our bird and direct us to an excellent vet was priceless. I can’t thank you enough.
On Monday night our young chickens were inadvertently left outside during the night. On Thursday morning my daughter realized that there was a large wound under the wing of one of our young birds. In a panic we remembered a friend of ours had mentioned Jennifer and Home to Roost.
Jennifer was literally at our house with in the hour, cleaning the bird’s wound and evaluating her. Although she quickly recognized that the wound was beyond her capability, she gave us the name of 3 excellent vets. We brought our bird to Animal House on Lawrence and California in Chicago , and Dr. Byron de la Navarre was fantastic. Thanks to Jennifer we ended up in good hands and our bird is healing happily with minimal treatment, just a topical cleanser and an oral antibiotic.” –Maria Nitsche
“I … appreciate your input last night at our Riverside Village meeting. Your input was upfront and honest, anyone considering backyard hens should be required to go to one of your talks.” –Joe B., Riverside trustee
“My chicken, (the one with the soft shelled egg in her, I am assuming you see a lot of birds) has recovered wonderfully. I found a solid poop in her cage early the morning after you came, and she is acting normally. Actually, she became broody almost immediately, puffing up at me and sitting all day in the nest box, so I’m thinking maybe this crisis interrupted her just when she was beginning to go broody. At any rate it must have really hurt her because she won’t let me touch her anymore and scratches whenever I pick her up which she did not do before even when she was broody. The other chickens are fine and seem rather put out over the food switch. Thank you again for fixing Bossy-girl’s problem …and showing me about feed bags and scratch.” –Ysobel G.
“Thanks for the class today at the Plainfield Library. Packed full of good info for beginners. Observing an egg being laid in person and being able to hold your hen was a cool unexpected bonus.” –Daniel S.
“I read the articles and watched the news clip on Cook County Jail and your efforts there…. The coop looks fabulous. The inmates in the program seem to be benefiting immensely – pride and task commitment. This was a win win – great idea. I hope it continues successfully.
I just read today that in NY only 4 percent in jail are violent offenders, yet Bloomberg spends 166,000 per inmate per year to keep each incarcerated. Looks like this program should spread…. Your program seems altruistic – good Karma coming to Jennifer the Chicken Lady : ) — Sally T.
“I’m so happy to have Jen as a resource. It’s a relief to be able to call someone when I need advice and support. We had a chicken health issue and I was able to reach her promptly and she even made a house call that night! Crossing through flooded communities to get here, no less. She spent time examining our chickens and showed me exactly how to check our chickens general health. I learned so much even just watching how she handles our birds.” — Rebecca W.
“Delighted to provide a personal recommendation: I am a graduate of [Jennifer’s Backyard Chicken Basics] workshop and am glad for having taken it… Good intro to keeping chickens in the city, good way to meet like-minded people, and good resources and take-a-ways. I learned what books to have on my shelf (and have used all of them over the past year) and who to call when the books didn’t help.” –Jean B.
“Thanks again for your help w/ Maisy. She’s doing much better now that she’s got calcium in her. She’s back in with the other hens (has been for a week+ now), and we’re getting 3-4 eggs daily out of the four of them (we waited patiently until she finally gave us one in her private cage before getting her back in w/ the others).” –Michael B.
“Thanks for all of advice & inspiration. You were instrumental in our coop getting started – without you our eggs would just be a dream!” –Lisa Z
“I just wanted to say thank you for the avian vet referral this morning. I went to see Dr. Sakas and he was amazing!!! Affordable and very knowledgeable. I thought she was eggbound, and it turned out she is impacted head to tail with sand!!! She is overeating it for some reason, ovulation suspected. He is keeping her overnight and is going to try fixing her. Fingers crossed!!!” –Danielle
“Thank you so much for your help diagnosing her cause of death. You are so knowledgeable about chicken care and while it is not rocket science it is clear that your experience is of great value to anyone thinking about raising chickens in their backyard.” — Cindy
“Thank you so much. I learned a ton while you were here and a very grateful to have you as a resource! — Rebecca
“Jennifer was great! She came to our house and knew everything, or had a book or two to look it up. We recently called her emergently when several of our beloved chickens became very ill. We had already lost one chicken by the time our vet made a diagnosis of parasitic infection. He thought that Jennifer ought to be called in for an on-site visit. She came to our house, inspected the coop and our chickens who were in various stages of poor health, and spent over an hour examining each hen and going over a series of recommendations. She clearly had a deep knowledge of avian health and illness, and answered all of our questions patiently. We followed her instructions, our hens promptly recovered, and all of them are now thriving.
We cannot praise Jennifer enough, and give her a big thumbs-up. Call her when your chickens are sick, they (and you) will be grateful for her service!” –(another) Rebekah
