Join Green Community Connections on Sat, Sept 29th for the 2nd annual Green Living and Learning Tour in Oak Park and River Forest IL. Choose from more than 20 tour sites and demonstrations showcasing sustainable living in the areas of energy, food, waste, and water. Bike, walk, scooter, or carpool with friends and family to learn up-close from your neighbors about energy conservation and renewable energy, composting, keeping bees and chickens, growing healthy food, brewing your own beer, conserving water in your home and in your yard, reducing waste, and much more!

21 April, 2012: Earthfest in Oak Park


Join Home to Roost at Oak Park’s family-friendly green festival!

The Village’s third annual celebration of green living – Earth Fest – is schedule for 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Sat., April 21, in the LEED Gold-certified Public Works Center, 201 South Blvd.

This year’s event will focus on the local, sustainable food movement. Chef demos, kid-friendly activities, a community mural, farmers, and eco-focused vendors will be included in the day’s events.

Chef demonstrations will be provided throughout the day by four local restaurants including Constructive Chaos in River Forest, Eyrie, The Perfect Dinner, and Marion Street Cheese Market.
In addition to chef demos, the nearly 50 vendors slated to be at Earth Fest will be providing plenty of hands-on activities and information for all ages. Some of the day’s scheduled highlights include:

  • Free composting and organic gardening consultation
  • Canning demonstrations
  • Recycled art projects for kids
  • Car sharing information
  • Shedd Aquarium’s Right Bite, with information about sustainable seafood
  • Energy efficiency tips
  • Information on co-friendly landscaping
  • Details on raising chickens in Oak Park

A new addition to this year’s festival will be Recycle Alley – an on-site opportunity for residents to bring items to recycle that aren’t part of the normal blue bin recycling program in Oak Park. Items to be recycled include: blue jeans, glasses and hearing aids, prescriptions medication, CFL light bulbs, cell phones, rechargeable batters, and corks.

Sept. 24, 2011: Green Connections Bike Tour in Oak Park


Join Home to Roost and other green endeavors for a bike tour in Oak Park!

The tour will provide an opportunity for Oak Park and River Forest residents to learn about the many green initiatives that their neighbors have implemented and support them in thinking about what they can do in their homes, schools and neighborhoods.

There will be about 15 sites on the tour, including private homes, schools, universities, community gardens, and local businesses. Home to Roost will be at a client’s home.

The tour will run from about 1 PM to 3:45 PM and will end with a gathering at 4 PM to allow participants to debrief.

Chicken Raising Class July 30, 2011

I brought a buff Orpington rooster to EarthFest this year, just to jazz things up a bit! The intermittent crowing was a good crowding-gathering gimmick, and it was fun to be working with poultry testosterone again! Here’s a little video posted on YouTube! Watch for the chicken pix!

EarthFest is a community-based event that draws green vendors of both products and services.

June 22, 2011: Mid-Week Market


Chickens hit the Oak Park Mid-Week Market on June 22!

Home to Roost will be at the Oak Park farmers market from 5 to 9 on Wednesday evening! Come out and meet a chicken!

Then stock up on locally grown fruits and vegetables, or grab a bite for dinner and visit local retailers’ booths! The market is in downtown Oak Park on Lake Street, just east of Harlem Avenue.

May 21, 2011: Home to Roost at Earth Fest in Oak Park


Earth Fest 2011, a gathering of eco-friendly vendors, groups, children’s activities and live entertainment, is seeking vendors for the event set for 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., Sat., May 21 at the Oak Park Public Works Center, 201 South Blvd.

This year’s event will feature vendor booths and a variety of kid-friendly activities available outside at the Public Works Center. Some of the items available from the vendors will include clothing, personal care items, books gardening items, services for health and sustainable living, and more.

The event also will coincide with a celebration of Public Works Day, which will feature an open house to give the public an inside look at the LEED-certified Public Works Center with an up-close look at the building and equipment, snacks and much more.
