Chicken Ordinance Report

In February of 2010, students of Dr. Hugh Bartling at DePaul University conducted a survey of more than 20 U.S. municipalities that allow chickens. The survey focused on how the laws were implemented and the issues that arose. Read the original report here.

i began chicken keeping in May but apparently it is against our current ordinances and a neighbor has complained and i now have 2 weeks to find another home for my chickens, which makes me (and my 94 yr old mom) very sad. I will comply with the request but would like to begin the process of changing the ordinance. I have found this report to be useful and intend to use it. Any other suggestions would be very appreciated. Thank you!

    • So sorry to hear that, Jen.
Check out the Resources for Legalizing Chickens tab, and search for the information on the Arlington Heights group – they are working on legalizing chickens and may also have some great resources. If you do not find their email addresses (Mary, Matt, or Renee), I can email them to you offline.
