This article addresses the new Egg Products Inspection Act, which it later refers to as “lipstick on a pig.”
In the industrial egg factories where most of America’s eggs are laid, the newly introduced Egg Products Inspection Act would, if passed, make life easier. The bill grew from a compromise between United Egg Producers and the Humane Society of the United States. It would mandate replacing the nation’s 280 million chicken-sized battery cages as they’re called with group cages equipped with amenities like dust baths and perches, while banning some of the cruelest practices associated with egg farming.

This outrageous bill would establish egg factory CAGES as a national standard that could never be challenged or changed by state law or public vote. Instead of outlawing cages – this crazy measure would outlaw the BANNING of cages. That is why it is being pushed by the egg industry itself! The Stop the Rotten Egg Bill (http://www.StopTheRottenEggBill.org) campaign is getting it right. Check it out. This bill would stop cage-free laws dead in their tracks and keep hens locked in cruel metal cages forever, while instituting a variety of empty “reforms” that are already occurring due to state law and public pressure. Congress may have a mandate from the egg industry, but certainly not from the vast majority of Americans who support REAL anti-cruelty reform and an end to battery cages. This stinks.
