2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

4,329 films were submitted to the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. This blog had 28,000 views in 2012. If each view were a film, this blog would power 6 Film Festivals

22 Jan., 2013: Support Arlington Heights’ Chicken Movement

Join Mary Green and Matt Scallon on Tues., January 22nd at 8pm as they go before the Village Board of Trustees to request permission to keep backyard chickens.

They need as many supporters as possible to attend the meeting on the 3rd floor of Village Hall (33 S. Arlington Heights Road). Matt and Mary will both be speaking, and it would be great if a few residents could also speak in support of allowing backyard chickens in Arlington Heights. You can sign up that night before the meeting starts.

If you’re not inclined toward public speaking, you can write a short message in support of their efforts. Contact Mary (marysgreen@hotmail.com) for a list of the benefits and misconceptions around backyard chickens you can use in your letter.

Some local media are:

You can also contact individual trustees through email addresses listed at www.vah.com/government/village_board/default.aspx
Green and Scallon are particularly focused on getting “yes” votes from Trustees Glasgow, Scaletta, Breyer, and Farwell, as well as from Mayor Mulder.

They’ll be presenting approximately 200 signatures; if you have any petitions with signatures, please return them to Mary asap!

Iowa City One Step Closer to Legalizing Chickens

Home to Roost was interviewed this week for this article on the quest to legalize chickens in Iowa City.

The Iowa City City Council voted 5-2 on the first consideration of an amendment to the city’s zoning code on establishing a permit process, which would allow residents to keep chickens at single-family detached residences. Councilors Michelle Payne and Terry Dickens voted against the measure.

Good luck, Iowa City chicken enthusiasts!

Organic, Pastured Eggs in Chicagoland

A lot of folks ask me “Where can I buy local eggs?” It’s not legal to sell backyard eggs in the city (you can give a donation or own the chickens). However, John Emrich of Backyard Chicken Run recently mentioned Barrington Natural Farms to me!

Barrington Natural Farms is sustainable “pasture” farm providing our Chicago-area customers with locally grown, organically-raised grass-fed beef, raw milk, pasture-raised chicken and pork, and free-range eggs.

Growing the highest quality food possible is our goal. We believe that good food is nutritious and delicious. We believe the way to raise livestock is to provide an environment that mimics nature and is integrated with our natural environment.  This means they are raised outdoors on fresh pasture for the majority of their lives, with the pigs and chickens organic pasture forage supplemented with organic, non-GMO feeds.
